The short version
CatchYak AI doesn’t have accounts, and it keeps your catch log, photos, kayak profiles, and saved plans on your phone. To show weather, find lakes and launch points, and generate fishing advice, the app sends your location and trip details through our server to the weather, maps, and AI services listed below. We don’t sell your information, we don’t show ads, and we don’t track you across other apps or websites.
Who we are
This policy explains how Odd Syntax Studios LLC (“we,” “us”), an Ohio limited liability company, handles information in the CatchYak AI mobile app for iOS and Android (the “app”) and on this website, oddsyntaxstudios.com (the “site”). We are responsible for the information described here. You can reach us at [email protected].
Information the app uses
Location
With your permission, the app uses your device’s location to show current weather and wind, find lakes near you, and suggest nearby launch points. The app asks for location while you’re using it. You can decline or turn location off at any time in your device settings and search for a lake by name instead.
Camera and photos
The app accesses your camera or photo library only when you choose to attach a photo to a catch. The photo is saved with that catch on your device. We don’t upload your photos to our server or to any third party.
Information you enter
You can enter a catch log (species, size, lure, notes, and conditions), kayak profiles, a home lake and recently used lakes, a species preference, trip details such as your time window and water clarity, saved trip plans, and custom launch points. This information is stored locally on your device.
Float plan
If you use the float plan feature, the app prepares a message describing your launch point, route, and expected return time and opens your device’s messaging app. You choose who receives it and whether to send it. We don’t receive the message or your contacts.
Outside services we use
Some features need information from outside services. The app sends those requests to a server we operate on Cloudflare’s network, which forwards them to the service and returns the answer. This keeps our service keys out of the app. Our server doesn’t require you to identify yourself, and we don’t use it to build a profile of you.
| Service | Why | What is sent |
|---|---|---|
| OpenWeatherMap | Current weather and forecasts | Location coordinates of you or the lake you selected |
| Google Maps Platform (Places) | Lake search, lake details, and nearby launch points | The text you search for and location coordinates |
| Anthropic (Claude) | Bite reports, trip plans, routes, and spot advice | The lake name, launch and spot locations, weather conditions, your trip details, and the kayak description you entered |
| Cloudflare | Runs the server that forwards the requests above | The contents of those requests, plus your IP address and basic connection information, as with any internet request |
| Apple Maps (iOS) | Displays the map | Map area being viewed, handled under Apple’s privacy policy |
We don’t send your catch log or catch photos to these services. Each service handles the information it receives under its own privacy policy: OpenWeather, Google, Anthropic, Cloudflare, and Apple. Under its commercial terms, Anthropic does not use requests sent through its API to train its models.
What we don’t do
- We don’t require an account, and we don’t collect your name, email address, or phone number through the app.
- We don’t sell or rent personal information, and we don’t share it for targeted advertising.
- The app doesn’t show ads and doesn’t include advertising or third-party analytics software.
- We don’t track you across apps and websites owned by other companies.
Subscriptions and purchases
We plan to offer an optional Pro subscription. Purchases will be processed by Apple through the App Store or by Google through Google Play under their terms and privacy policies. We won’t receive your payment card details. The app will receive confirmation of whether you have an active subscription so it can unlock Pro features.
Keeping and deleting information
Information stored on your device stays there until you delete it in the app or delete the app. Deleting the app removes its local data, including your catch log and photos saved inside it, so export or back up anything you want to keep first.
Our forwarding server is designed to pass requests through, not to store their contents. Cloudflare may keep short-lived technical logs for security and reliability. The weather, maps, and AI providers keep information according to their own policies linked above.
Your choices and rights
- Permissions. You can allow or deny location, camera, and photo access, and change your mind at any time in your device’s Settings.
- Deletion. You can delete individual catches, kayaks, and plans in the app, or delete everything by removing the app.
- Questions and requests. Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, or delete personal information or to object to how it is used. Because we don’t keep accounts or store your app data on our servers, we usually hold nothing that identifies you. Write to us and we’ll help with any request we can fulfill.
Children
The app is not directed to children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
Security
Requests between the app, our server, and outside services travel over encrypted connections. Information on your phone is protected by your device’s own security, such as its passcode. No method of storage or transmission is perfectly secure, but we limit what we handle in the first place.
Where information is processed
We are based in the United States. The services listed above may process information in the United States and other countries where they operate.
This website
This site is a set of static pages hosted on Cloudflare Pages. It doesn’t use cookies, analytics, advertising, or embedded content from other companies, and its fonts are served from this domain. Like any web host, Cloudflare processes your IP address and request information to deliver pages and protect the site from abuse. If you email us, we use your message and email address only to reply and keep a record of the conversation.
Changes to this policy
If we change how the app handles information, for example when subscriptions launch, we will update this page and the date at the top. If a change is significant, we will also tell you in the app.
